meet our members

Rusty Thoma joined Lubbock Monterey Chapter of AMBUCS IN 1991. His sponsor was Larry Harvey. Rusty works at Thoma Engineering, Inc., Structural Engineers. They design the structures for buildings.  As Rusty states, “This is like designing the bones and skin that support a building.” They typically work as a consultant for architects, owners, or public entities such as Texas Tech University and the City of Lubbock.  Majority of their work currently involves new schools or Texas Tech University. They are starting to design tornado shelters for the new schools.

An interesting fact Rusty wanted to share, was regarding his middle son. His son had a brain tumor in 1984 and has worked with therapists off and on ever since. I think this points to the fact we don’t know how important therapists are until we need them. One of the projects Lubbock Monterey Chapter of AMBUCS has is the AMBUCS Scholarship Program. Lubbock Monterey Chapter of AMBUCS raises funds for scholarships for our future therapists.

Rusty’s favorite pastime is collecting old books; especially books related to structural engineering. He also enjoys watching old movies. Rusty likes to run and has completed 3 marathons (26.2 miles long) in the past 3 years. He states he is looking forward to his next marathon.

Rusty and his wife, Jency, have been married since December 29, 1979. Jency is the business manager at Thoma Engineering, Inc. They are proud of their 3 boys: Tristan who is married has 2 kids and is a realtor and property manager (lives in New Home); Travis, works at Premier Cinema (lives at home); and Trace who is married has 2 kids and is a graphic designer and artist (lives in Richardson).

When Lubbock Monterey Chapter of Ambucs had their restaurant at the South Plains Fair, both Rusty and Jancy gave their time in flipping hamburgers, or whatever was needed to raise funds for our projects.

Rusty’s goal: TO FINISH THE RACE!! Rusty we all at Lubbock Monterey Chapter of AMBUCS are “rooting” for you in all your races.

We are so grateful to have Rusty Thoma as a member of our Lubbock Monterey AMBUCS Team, and, whether you’re a long-time Lubbock resident or a newcomerif you, too, would like to learn more about our mission and see about joining our Team, just JOIN US at one of our regular Monday Lunches at the McKenzie/Merket Alumni Center on the Tech Campus.
