One of the key programs that Lubbock Monterey AMBUCS raises funds for is the Scholarship Program for Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and Hearing Audiology Students through the Texas Tech University Health Science Center. It’s important to help in this area, because these students will become the future professionals that are required by National AMBUCS to recommend the AmTrykes that we also raise funds to provide to children, adults and now vets.
Since 1955, National AMBUCS, Inc. has been awarding scholarships to therapy students in their junior/senior year in a bachelor’s degree program, or a graduate program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree. To date, more than $8 million in scholarships have been awarded to over 14,500 students pursuing degrees in the four therapy categories mentioned earlier.
Over $150,000 is awarded annually with individual awards ranging from $500 to $1500. There is one two-year award in the amount of $6,000. Award monies are deposited each semester to the student’s credit account with the financial aid office of the educational institution.
Students must be accepted in an accredited program by the appropriate health therapy profession authority in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, or hearing audiology. Assistant programs are not eligible. Awards are based on financial need, US citizenship, commitment to the local community, character for compassion and integrity, and career objectives.
National AMBUCS, Inc. accepts applications from February 18 until April 15, annually, and final scholarship winners are announced in late June.
2015 Scholarships have already been awarded, but our club takes participation by local students in our local fundraisers into consideration when putting our new list together each year, so several students helped with our recent Vuelta del Llano Bike Race, and others will be helping in our South Plains Fair Hamburger Restaurant, and other fund raisers that we may plan during the year.
Through the efforts of Patty Vannoy, the current National AMBUCS President and long-time member of the National Scholarship Committee, a pleasantly disproportionate amount of the National Scholarship Funds come right back to our community to support these local students, many of whom will stay right here after graduation – like one of our local recipients, Sherry Sancibrian, who is now head of the department at Tech where she received her degree almost 40 years ago.
